If you run long enough, some minor pain is inevitable. However, some aches can be avoided altogether. Knee pain is one of those aches that can be limited to a minor inconvience at worse. We've all heard stories about runners who needed knee replacements after years of running. I don't know a single person who has had a knee replaced due to running. But, I do know a few who have had replacements due to obesity. They were just to heavy for their knee joints. Having said that, here is how to avoid knee pain. First, you should always run in the shoes that are right for you. Secondly, you will need to strengthen the muscles around your knee joints. Leg extensions, squats and leg curls work best. Another myth you might have heard is "I'm to heavy to start running, I'll destroy my knees." I have seen runners who were heavy. But, they were very fit and very fast.
