Running Equipment

Before you begin running, it is very important that you receive a complete physical exam and approval from your physician.

Now it's time to start running.  The first thing you should purchase is a pair of running shoes. Your running shoes are the most important equipment you will need in your quest to run injury-free after 50. When choosing running shoes, you should visit stores that specialize in running gear. These stores have associates who are knowledgeable in the different types of running shoes. Select running shoes according to the size and shape of your foot. Your height and weight will also play a part in your choice.  Your associate can help you find the right fit.  When I first started running, I wore a well-cushioned shoe for training and long runs. As you run more, you should make adjustments in your shoe choices and consider rotating several pair. They will not wear out as fast. Remember the best shoes are not always the most expensive. Good shoes can be purchased at a reasonable price.

Running apparel should be made from a drip dry material. This material dries quickly and should keep you cool. Choose comfortable fitting absorbent socks.

Don't worry if you can't purchase new athletic wear.  The most important thing is to start running. Run in whatever you have that is comfortable to you. You can do it!
